Hon Syd Stirling MLA, Acting Minister for Asian Relations and TradeA Darwin-based training and education company is breaking new ground in Asia with the help of the Martin Government’s Trade Support Scheme.

The International College of Advanced Education (ICAE), a division of Myriad Group, is just one of 47 Territory companies who have applied for an export grant under the Trade Support Scheme.

"The Trade Support Scheme, launched on 1 July 2003, is designed to help existing exporters and traders expand their markets, and help Territory businesses enter new trade markets," Acting Asian Relations and Trade Minister Syd Stirling said.

"We dedicated $330,000 to the scheme in this financial year – a massive increase of $250,000 on the previous government’s Export Marketing Assistance Scheme – and we’re already starting to see the benefits flowing back to our exporters and traders."

ICAE has used their grant of more than $5000 to help seek out and establish new export markets for their online qualifications in hospitality and tourism.

ICAE’s qualifications are accredited by the Australian National Training Authority (the Australian Government’s education accreditation body), and Chief Executive Mr Sean Mahoney says their innovative training products are generating considerable interest in Hong Kong and Southern China.

"The great thing about the Trade Support Scheme is the emphasis it places on the development of solid export plans – with a solid business plan, exporters will be far more likely to succeed in their goals," said Mr Stirling.

"The ICAE is an excellent example of how traders and exporters can use these Government trade grants to open up new trade markets," said Mr Stirling.

Territory exporters can apply for taxable grants of up to $50,000 on an up to dollar for dollar basis under the Trade Support Scheme – and that’s a real boost when you’re looking to break new ground with your business.

As of today, 27 of the 47 applications received have been approved - totalling more than $117,000 in grants issued - with nearly $51,000 already paid out. Another 9 applications are still under consideration.
