Primary Industry and Fisheries Minister, Kon Vatskalis, today told Parliament he has written to his Federal Opposition counterpart, Gavan O’Connor, to state the Martin Government’s unreserved support for the live export industry. “Live exports are a significant primary industry contributor, injecting around $160 million directly into the economy, with more than $500 million in flow on benefits to our regional economy,” he said. “Recent adverse media reports surrounding the
rejection of 50,000 sheep by Saudi Arabian authorities and contamination
of feed for sheep destined for the “Live exports from the Territory are generally
short hauls to “Producers and exporters condition tropical
breeds which are suited to Territory conditions and those in our key
markets in south-east “Heytsbury Beef – the largest cattle producer and exporter in the Territory – reports that mortality rates on export shipments are around 0.07%.
