Hon Kon Vatskalis MLA, Minister for Primary Industry and FisheriesThe Northern Territory Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the continuation of the livestock export trade, following the release of the Federal Government’s response to the Keniry Report.

Primary Industry and Fisheries Minister, Kon Vatskalis, today told Parliament he has written to his Federal Opposition counterpart, Gavan O’Connor, to state the Martin Government’s unreserved support for the live export industry.

“Live exports are a significant primary industry contributor, injecting around $160 million directly into the economy, with more than $500 million in flow on benefits to our regional economy,” he said.

“Recent adverse media reports surrounding the rejection of 50,000 sheep by Saudi Arabian authorities and contamination of feed for sheep destined for the Middle East have cast this industry in a negative light, but I’m very pleased to report the Territory has a good record, recognising the health and welfare of our live exports.

“Live exports from the Territory are generally short hauls to South East Asia – generally only four to ten days in transit - and our mortality rates are less than 1 in 1500 animals on vessels travelling to Asia .

“Producers and exporters condition tropical breeds which are suited to Territory conditions and those in our key markets in south-east Asia .

“Heytsbury Beef – the largest cattle producer and exporter in the Territory – reports that mortality rates on export shipments are around 0.07%. Industry seeks to reduce this low level even further.”

Mr Vatskalis said the Territory’s live cattle export trade should be distinguished from other sectors of Australia ’s livestock trade, and recognised for its success in the management of animal health and welfare.
