Transport and Infrastructure Minister Dr Chris Burns today confirmed that funding to complete the sealing of the Cox Peninsula Road will be approved in the Budget on May 18.
“The sealing of the entire road is fantastic news for residents of the Cox Peninsula ,” Dr Burns said.
“It will give them a smooth journey all the way to the Stuart Highway , reduce wear and tear on their vehicles, and opens up further opportunities for two-wheel-drive touring.”
The Government's commitment of an additional $1.6 million will pay for the completion of the seal from the 58km mark to the 67km mark at Belyuen.
These works will take place in next year's Dry season.
The road is currently sealed up to the 53km mark, and then from Belyuen onwards to Mandorah and Wagait.
The 2003-04 Budget allocated $1 million to upgrade the road from the 53km to the 58km mark. Tenders for this work will be called this month. The completion target date for this 5km stretch of road is set for July 2004.
The 2002-03 Budget provided $1 million to seal approximately 7km of the road up to the 53km mark.
The Cox Peninsula road is an important arterial road and, as such, is a Northern Territory Government road.
