The Northern Territory Government today announced cash funding and a timetable for the provision of electricity to Dundee Beach. Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Dr Chris Burns, said the $5 million project to construct a power line through to the Dundee Beach and Lodge areas would be completed in the 2004/05 financial year. “This is great news for the people out at Dundee and a major infrastructure investment by the NT Government,” he said. “The extension of power to Dundee Beach was an election commitment by the Martin Government and follows more than a decade of neglect and broken promises by the previous government. “It will assist residents and local business by providing certainty of supply rather than needing to rely on power from a generator. “This funding will assist greatly in the development of the region and will ultimately result in new job, business and lifestyle opportunities in the near future.” The Government will provide funding of $3.8 million for the project, with Power and Water contributing $1.2 million. Survey and design work has begun, as has preliminary work on land heritage and environment issues. The project will see the construction of a 22,000 volt mainline from the McMinns Zone substation (on the corner of the Stuart and Arnhem highways) to Dundee. The line will go from McMinns down the Stuart Highway to Jenkins road and will follow Jenkins road until going across country to the Cox Peninsula road. It will then follow that road to Fog Bay road and onto Dundee . Tenders for construction will be called in June 2004, subject to all necessary environmental and sacred site clearances being completed. Construction is planned to commence in September 2004, and is anticipated to be completed within six months.
