Christine Anu to Play Inaugural BASSINTHEDUST

In a major boost to the inaugural Alice Springs Festival BASSINTHEDUST 2004 concert Chief Minister, Clare Martin, today confirmed that popular singer/songwriter Christine Anu has been named as the sixth national act.

Ms Martin said Christine joins an impressive and finalised line-up including: The Superjesus, Hilltop Hoods, Resin Dogs, TZU, Tecoma, Blacktide, Cinco Locos and C-Kaliberation.

“Christine Anu is an established, well know music star and will give the concert another national act and a top level indigenous performer,” she said.

“While she is probably best known for her hit song ‘My Island Home’ she has also forged an impressive resume of albums, theatre and dance.”

Christine was born in Cairns , North Queensland , of Torres Strait Island descent and studied dance at the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA).

Since then she has performed both in Australia and overseas with Bangarra Dance Theatre and the Aboriginal and Island Dance Theatre.

In 1996 she was best female artist at the Australasian Recording Industry Awards (ARIAs) and best female artist at the Deadly Sounds National Aboriginal & Islander Music Awards.

1997 saw Christine starring in the musical Little Shop of Horrors followed by a year in the hit musical Rent in 1998/99 to outstanding critical acclaim.

Christine Anu's has now completed her third album - which she has been touring nationally - and has described the sound as big and energetic.

Ms Martin said that the NT Government is the proud major sponsor for BASSINTHEDUST 2004 and is pleased to be able to provide another act for people to enjoy.

“My Government held BASSINTHEGRASS in 2003 and, whilst it was a success, changes were made to ensure BASSINTHEDUST 2004 meets community expectations,” she said.

“I hope people support and enjoy this year’s event and help it grow into the future.”

BASSINTHEDUST 2004 will be held at the Memo Club, September 11, from 2:00pm - 11:00pm . Tickets are $34 presale and $40 at the gate and go on sale Friday 20 th August. They are available from Chatterbox, Murray Neck Music World and Memo Club.
