The $1 billion Darwin City Waterfront will create jobs, new business opportunities and be an important additional to our great Territory lifestyle Chief Minister, Clare Martin, said today.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms Martin outlined the latest on the project which will see over $100 million worth of new capital investment in the Territory per year for the next three years (2005 – 07) and will feature 40 per cent open space for families to enjoy.

“The Darwin City Waterfront will be a great project for our business community and a significant addition to out great Territory lifestyle,” she said.

“Stage one - which features a wave pool, stinger free beaches, other swimming areas, walking tracks, a convention and exhibition centre, retail areas, units and open space - will be a $250 million construction project and is expected to start early next year.

“It has been developed following wide community consultation, which was incorporated into the proposal by the developers, and will replace what is currently an industrial eyesore.

“Opportunities will be created in civil and marine construction from projects such as the sea wall, roads, pedestrian amenities, essential services, building pads and swimming features.

“It will also create opportunities for the local construction sector in the convention centre, hotel, car park and commercial and residential projects.

“Stage one will create approximately 1,000 jobs, touching all sectors of the construction industry that will create fantastic opportunities for Territory contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers and workers.”

Ms Martin said that once stage one is completed the benefits will continue to flow with thousands of people brought to Darwin by the Convention Centre and Exhibition Centre.

“They will catch planes, eat at restaurants, use taxis, take tours and visit shops - especially those travelling with their families - adding $200 million into local business over 20 years.”

“The only thing the previous CLP Government ever did towards building a convention centre is put a wrecking ball through the historic Hotel Darwin!

“While the CLP Opposition is against the $1 billion Waterfront, my Government is proud that over the next 10 years we will help create a world-class precinct.”
