Lands and Planning Minister Dr Chris Burns will attend the 7th meeting of the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council in Melbourne on Friday 3 December.

“The Council’s aim is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Australia’s natural resources,” Dr Burns said.

“The meeting will review progress of the States’ and Territories’ development of integrated natural resource management plans.

“I will be reporting that the Northern Territory has completed its draft Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan and will launch a public consultation process later this month.

“This plan aims to develop targets for sustainable natural resource management in the Northern Territory.

“It describes the current condition, use, threats, and possible management solutions for the Territory’s natural resources and environments.

“The plan will be linked to an investment strategy under which approximately $7 million per annum of federal funds will be allocated to community projects identified by the plan.”

The Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council consists of the Federal, State, Territory and New Zealand government ministers responsible for primary industries, natural resources, environment and water policy.

It is the peak government forum for consultation and coordination of action by governments on natural resource management issues.
