The relocation of Darwin’s fuel tank farm in Stuart Park is another step closer with $5.4 million being spent on pipelines for the new bulk-fuel facilities in the Port of Darwin, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Dr Chris Burns said. “The Territory Government has awarded a $5.4 million contract to local company Steelcon Constructions (NT) for the installation of the pipeline and valves at the new facility at the Port of Darwin’s East Arm wharves,” Dr Burns said. “This brings us another step closer to BP, Mobil and Shell moving their operations from the Stuart Park tank farm to the new terminal, freeing up 25 hectares of inner city land.” This year’s Territory budget included a $10.3 million program for the construction of new oil delivery facilities at the Port of Darwin. “Steelcon Constructions will be responsible for installation of a receipt manifold at the Port of Darwin’s new bulk liquids berth and approximately three kilometres of pipeline between the bulk liquids berth and the Darwin Industry Fuel Terminal,” Dr Burns said. “The Darwin Industry Fuel Terminal is currently being built in the Darwin Business Park by Vopak Terminals.” Dr Burns said tenders for the construction of a fire protection system for the Bulk Liquids Berth and for buildings associated with control of tanker unloading and security arrangements will be called in December. The construction of Vopak’s $50 million Darwin Industry Fuel Terminal at the Darwin Business Park at East Arm is now well advanced. The construction of the 113 million litre facility is being undertaken by Henry Walker Eltin, and should be commissioned in the second half of next year. Bulk fuel deliveries will then be transferred to the East Arm wharves, and the existing tank farms in Stuart Park will be decommissioned. “The Government’s previous investments of $20 million for a bulk liquids berth at the East Arm wharves and $10.3 million for the receipt manifold and pipelines system will clearly provide major dividends for the Territory,” Dr Burns said.
