Around $350,000 in grants will be handed out to community groups through the latest round of Community Benefit funding.

Minister for Racing, Gaming and Licensing Syd Stirling said 134 community groups throughout the Territory would share in the first funding round for 2004-05.

“Under the Fund, non-profit Territory-based organisations are able to apply for grants of up to $5000 for approved community projects and activities,” Mr Stirling said.

“The Community Benefit Committee gave careful consideration to each of the 193 applications for funding in this round, but unfortunately the application requests far exceeded available funds.

“In the end, a total of 134 grants were approved across the Territory, worth $348,855.

“Successful applicants will be notified shortly, but the regional breakdown of grants is as follows:

  • 22 grants approved for the Alice Springs region worth $74,650
  • 9 grants approved for Tennant Creek worth $23,182
  • 9 grants for the outer Darwin region worth $23,000
  • 9 grants for the Katherine region worth $25,692
  • 14 grants for the East Arnhem region worth $29,275
  • 71 grants for the Darwin region worth $173,055

“While funding requests far exceeded the available budget, unsuccessful organisations are encouraged to apply for a grant under the next funding round,” Mr Stirling said.

“The NT Government is proud to be able to assist the efforts of community groups throughout the Territory in recognition of the invaluable role they play in supporting our community.”

The Community Benefit Fund was set up by Government to ensure that a proportion of the money received from the operation of electronic gaming machines was made available to directly assist in the development of Territory communities.
