The 2005-2006 Sport and Recreation Grants Program is now open to receive applications for more than $5 million in grant funding, Acting Sports Minister Paul Henderson announced today.

Grants are available to peak sport and recreation organisations, local governing bodies and organisations with sport and recreation facilities, and the Office of Sport and Recreation encourages all eligible organisations to apply.

“Our Grants Program is outcome-based and assists organisations to develop appropriate infrastructure to provide quality and inclusive sport and recreation opportunities for all Territorians,” said Mr Henderson.

“Previous eligible projects have included contributions towards developing management practices; supporting travel to national competitions for athletes, including carers for special needs athletes; and developing sports in regional areas.

“Grants for local governing bodies received a 12 per cent boost in 2004-05 bringing funding to over $1 million for the first time, which allowed community sport and recreation officers to be employed in more than 38 regional and remote communities.

“I encourage local governing bodies, and other eligible organisations, to lodge applications again for the 2005-06 round of grants.”
