Police Minister Henderson welcomed the renewal of local television, radio and print advertising for the next round of recruits to the Northern Territory Police Force.

“One of the key factors that will influence the future of policing in the Northern Territory is the extent to which we can expand our local recruiting base.

“This was clearly identified in the O’Sullivan Report which led to our government adopting the four year $75 million Building Our Police Force Plan,” said Mr Henderson.

“Traditionally, recruits have run at about 20-30 per cent of new squads—the previous round of advertising appears to already have had an effect, lifting that level to more than 40 per cent.

“It’s also pleasing to see that there is a concerted effort on the part of the NT Police to broaden its local recruit base to reflect the multicultural diversity of the Territory community.

“In ‘making the change’ to a new career path, these local recruits are part of the process of moving the Territory forward.”

Mr Henderson said that the renewed advertising was an important component in the Territory’s record $172 million budget for Police Fire and Emergency Services. It means that we are well on target toexpand by 200 the number of police on the beat by 2006.

“Included in the package has been an additional $13 million for police personnel, enabling these record levels of recruitment.

“In addition we will be spending $1.8 million this year to upgrade 66 police houses to help keep experienced officers in the Territory,” said Mr Henderson.
