A domestic violence education campaign has been launched in Alice Springs to educate the community about this serious social problem.

The Alice Springs Women’s Shelter and the Catherine House Domestic Violence Outreach Service have produced a CD with the help of victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.

Minister for Justice Dr Peter Toyne said this is a perfect example of Crime Prevention Grants being used to create local solutions to local problems.

“The $15,700 NT Crime Prevention Grant Scheme allowed the groups to produce the educational tool,”

“Central Australian men and women from all backgrounds have been interviewed on a range of topics relating to domestic violence.

“They provided genuine responses to their experiences of domestic violence.

“The material was collated to produce a 75 minute CD which will be used as an educational resource.

“The interviews will also be used to create 10 community announcements for radio,” Dr Toyne said.

The Government’s provides $400,000 for the NT Crime Prevention Grant Scheme, which includes:

 $120,000 to fund small grants to community organisations for innovative one-off crime prevention programs that contribute to community safety
 $100,000 to support Regional Crime Prevention Councils and fund regional crime strategies
 $180,000 to fund targeted crime prevention projects developed through community and government partnerships.

Regional Crime Prevention Councils and local prevention councils have already received funding for locally based crime prevention projects that include development of crime prevention strategies and community and safety plans, anti-graffiti projects, and the development of a pilot early intervention project for families with children aged under five.
