851 young Territorians are looking to their future today after receiving their NT Certificates of Education. Chief Minister and Acting Employment, Education and Training Minister Clare Martin congratulated the students, saying that it was a significant achievement in their lives. “For each of these students, receiving their NTCE is the culmination of a lot of hard work and commitment over the past few years of their schooling,” Ms Martin said. “I wish each of them the very best as they now turn their thoughts to their future career paths and I urge them to consider the many options available to them right here in the Territory.” Ms Martin said 37 more students had achieved their NTCE this year than last year. Of the total, 83 are Indigenous students, an increase of 25 on last year. Casuarina Senior College student Rifly Rafiudeen scored a perfect 100 points to be the Northern Territory ’s top NTCE student for 2004. Seventeen-year-old Rifly achieved 20 out of 20 for English Studies, Mathematical Studies, Chemistry and Physics. In 2003 he also scored 20/20 for Biology at Darwin High, which counted towards his final score. Casuarina Senior College Principal Steve Sjoberg said he and his staff were very proud of Rifly Rafiudeen and his achievement. “Rifly has been a quiet, pleasant and reserved student who was clearly very focused on his studies. He has had tremendous support from his teachers and family, but ultimately it was Rifly who did the hard work and he fully deserves the mark.” Mr Sjoberg said scoring 100 in Year 12 was akin to a ticket to anywhere and that Rifly was well on his way to achieving his ambition of a career in medicine. It is the second time in the past three years that a Territorian has achieved a perfect score of 100, following the success of Sid Vemuri in 2002. Top Central Australian student was Saul Wakerman from Charles Darwin University ’s Senior Secondary College . Saul was also the second top student for the Territory with a score of 97. This year, 21 students shared the top 20 marks in the Territory, with seven from Casuarina Senior College and seven from Darwin High School . Forty-two students from nine schools received 54 merit awards (20/20 for a particular subject), with six Indigenous students sharing in nine of these awards. Ms Martin today also congratulated and thanked the Territory’s teachers today for the support and guidance they have provided students throughout the year. Students are able to check their results on the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia website - www.ssabsa.sa.edu.au A Results and Options Advice Service (ROAS) will offer a free-call telephone helpline on 1800 009 282. The service will operate from the Charles Darwin University Info Shop in Darwin where careers advisers and a university staff member will be available to assist students and parents interpret results and discuss career and tertiary options. The service will operate from 8.30am to 5pm until Christmas Eve. Top 20 NTCE students - 2004
