Establishment of Multicultural Hub at Malak

A multicultural hub has been established in the northern suburbs with the relocation of the Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory (MCNT) and the Multilingual Broadcasting Council of the Northern Territory (MBCNT) to the Malak Shopping Centre.

Multicultural Affairs Minister, Kon Vatskalis, today officially opened the new premises. The Northern Territory Government committing almost $750,000 to assist in the move.

“Having these two important Councils in one location will ensure easy access for our multicultural community, which relies upon the services offered,” said Mr Vatskalis.

The Minister said funding towards the project includes:

  • $27,000 from the 2003/04 Ethnic Affairs Sponsorship Program towards the employment of a Project Officer at the MCNT to manage the relocation of the two Councils;
  • $130,000 from the 2004/05 Ethnic Affairs Sponsorship Program to the MCNT as operational assistance;
  • $140,000 from the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment to cover the cost of relocation for both MCNT and MBCNT;
  • $80,000 towards the lease of premises;
  • $350,000 from the Metropolitan Shopping Centre Upgrade Program to upgrade the Malak Shopping Centre precinct.

“This Government is serious about supporting and celebrating our multicultural community, and is making more than $1.2 million in grants available to various groups,” said Mr Vatskalis.

“Funding this year includes $500,000 per annum for the next three years to assist multicultural community organisations with the renovation and upgrade of existing facilities, and $697,000 for the Multicultural Affairs Sponsorship Program, including $150,000 for Cultural and Linguistics Awards.”
