A network of cycle and walking paths along the Todd and Charles rivers is opening up the Alice Springs riverbank environment to residents and tourists.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Dr Chris Burns said the second stage of the project was almost complete, with work on the next phase of the network due to start in the New Year.

“The pathway along Barrett Drive from Stephens Road to Tuncks Road is finished and work is nearly complete on the upgrade of the path across the Taffy Pick causeway,” Dr Burns said.

“The upgrade of the entry to the Olive Pink Botanic Garden is also finished.

“The pathways along the western bank of the rivers from the Old Timers to the Telegraph Station are very popular with cyclists and walkers and have really opened up the riverbanks for community enjoyment.

“When the paths along the eastern banks are completed there will be a network of linked cycle and walking paths along the town’s river corridor.”

Dr Burns said the next phase of the pathway network would see a continuation north from Tuncks Road, around the base of Annie Meyer Hill to Stott Terrace and on to Undoolya Road.

“Funding of $330,000 has been provided to the Alice Springs Town Council under the NT Government’s Alice in Ten program for this stage of construction,” Dr Burns said.

“The Territory Government has committed a total of $885,000 to the Todd and Charles rivers project.

“Work is also underway to redefine the river channel and improve flows by removing weed and accumulated sand in the Todd.

“These projects will help make the rivers and their banks an attractive and enjoyable focal point for Alice Springs.”
