Terry Mills - Member for Blain

21 February 2013

Chief Minister Terry Mills today announced a Northern Territory Government audit has revealed sufficient land with potential to accommodate more than 1000 new houses.

“My Government is focused on land release across Darwin and surrounding areas, and relieving the high-cost housing pressures in the Northern Territory,” Mr Mills said.

“Since the Country Liberals came to Government in August last year, we have ordered an audit, located suitable land for release, and are now moving quickly to get development under way.

“The audit has recognised Berrimah Farm as a site ready for residential development in the top-end, and there is a large area of land in Katherine East that will accommodate more than 400 dwellings.

“Preliminary planning is also underway on the next stage of housing along Peko Road in Tennant Creek.

“My Government is progressing quickly for land release at Zuccoli Stage 2, Muirhead North, and Mitchell.

“Undeveloped land across the Northern Territory is being considered and infill across Darwin and surrounding areas will provide increased housing, resulting in reduced pressure on accommodation prices, and will ultimately lead to a lower cost of living.

“We understand there is a need to obtain a balance between the demand and supply of land.

“This Government is committed to reducing the high-cost of living for Territorians, and will work to address the issue of housing affordability through land release.”
