Alison Anderson - Member for Namatjira

22 March 2013

Minister for Women’s Policy, Alison Anderson, today announced the appointment of Joanne Sangster as Executive Director of the newly formed Office of Women’s Advancement.

Minister Anderson earlier this month unveiled a new direction for women’s policy in the Northern Territory with the establishment of a standalone government agency reporting directly to the Minister with a clear and direct line to Cabinet.

“Women’s lives have improved over the past decades, but there is a lot more that can be done around reducing rates of homelessness, domestic violence and bridging the gender pay gap,” she said.

“This is why we need to focus on a policy which is supported by practical measures and is accessible to all Territory women,” Ms Anderson said

Ms Anderson has tasked the new Office with pursuing the three main objectives of the Government for women in the Territory:

“The benefits of a new stand-alone Office of Women’s Advancement now headed up by Jo are considerable and on-going,” Ms Anderson said.

“Jo is committed to improving the lives of women across the Territory and I am looking forward to working with her and her team as we implement the new policy focus to remove barriers that stop women taking up the many employment, educational and leadership opportunities available in the Territory.

“Jo has lived in the Territory for 16 years and is passionate about enabling all women in the Territory to be able to reach their full potential,” Ms Anderson said.

Joanne Sangster is a mother of four young children, Helena 9, Felix 7, Rudi 5 and Liberty 22 months.

All of her children were born in the Territory and three were born at home.

She was president of the Childbirth Education Association for a number of years during which time she fought hard to bring about a women centred approach to birthing across the Territory.

She has been an Alderman on the Darwin City Council for 11 years and was President of the Australian Local Government Women's Association NT.

Jo has a background in social policy and program management with a degree in Social Work and Masters in Social Research.
