Live Broacasts Of AFL Games Under Threat

The current level of live AFL matches broadcast in the Territory is under threat following reports today that negotiations between Channel 10, Channel 7 and Foxtel have reached an impasse.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Kon Vatskalis, said any reduction in the number of AFL matches broadcast live in the Territory would be a kick in the teeth for Territory footy lovers.

“Territorians love their footy and any reduction in live AFL matches is simply

unacceptable,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“While footy fans in southern states will get the choice between two live AFL matches on free to air television, Territorians are in danger of only having one match.

“This means the number of live AFL matches broadcast in the Territory could be reduced to only four.

“I have written to Channel 10, Channel 7 and the AFL calling on them to ensure that Territorians are not left out in the cold by any new arrangements that are negotiated.

“The Martin Labor Government has shown its commitment to delivering live AFL matches for Territorians by recently signing an agreement which secures nine AFL games in the Territory over the next three years.

“Territorians have long been great supporters of footy and the AFL, and it would be a great shame if this support was rewarded with a reduction in live footy action,” Mr Vatskalis said.
