NRL Pre-Season Games Secured For Three Years

The Northern Territory Government has reached an agreement with the ARL which will see NRL pre-season games played in the Territory for three more years.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Kon Vatskalis, said the deal, worth $264 000, would deliver NRL action between the Penrith Panthers and the Newcastle Knights in Darwin next year.

“World class sporting fixtures are part of our great Territory lifestyle and I am thrilled that Territory Rugby League fans will be able to see live NRL action over the next three years,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“The game between the Panthers and the Knights in Alice Springs earlier this year was a resounding success with over 6 000 fans attending the clash at Anzac Oval.

“I am confident that the matches to be played in Darwin in 2007 and 2009, and in Alice Springs in 2008, will build on the success of this year match.

“I am hopeful that the success of these matches will help us secure an NRL home and away game in the coming seasons,” Mr Vatskalis said.

Community Football Manager for the ARL, Mr Graham McNaney, said the ARL was delighted with the continued support for Rugby League from the Territory Government.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming matches and working with the Territory Government to see Rugby League continue to grow and develop in the Territory,” Mr McNaney said.
