MALAYSIA AIRLINES RETURNS TO DARWIN

10 July 2013

Darwin’s gateway to Asia has been opened even wider with the welcome news that Malaysia Airlines will once again be flying between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur.

From November, Malaysia Airlines’ 160-seater Boeing 737-800 will return up to five flights per week between the destinations. The airline last serviced Darwin in November 2002.

Chief Minister Adam Giles said it was fantastic to hear Malaysia Airlines would soon be returning to Territory skies.

“This is a great vote of confidence in the Territory economy and our future and reflects the strong working relationship between the Territory Government, Darwin Airport and international carriers,” Mr Giles said.

“The Country Liberals Government is driving the development of Northern Australia and key to this is positioning Darwin as a key international aviation hub.

“The return of Malaysia Airlines will further strengthen our engagement with the Asian region and our economic and community ties with Malaysia.”

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Matt Conlan, said today’s announcement would bring approximately 800 additional inbound seats per week to the Territory.

“Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Darwin will provide a welcome boost for the Northern Territory tourism industry,” Mr Conlan said.

“Malaysia Airlines is a premium full service carrier that has a comprehensive global network, especially in the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia, which will undoubtedly improve access to the Territory from these key tourism markets.

“A member of the Oneworld alliance, the airline will also be able to offer convenient connections via the Oneworld member airlines integrated networks which include powerhouse carriers like British Airways and Qantas.

“Tourism NT will now work on marketing opportunities with Malaysia Airlines to capitalise on these new flights and connections to the Territory.”

Currently there is no direct service to Kuala Lumpur from Darwin. Malaysia Airlines will be the fifth international airline to service Darwin.
