Big Win For Territory Footy Lovers

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Kon Vatskalis, today welcomed news that a deal had been struck that will see Territorians retain the current number of live AFL telecast each weekend.

Under the deal brokered by AFL Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou, Foxtel and Austar will show half of the AFL home and away games for the next five years.

“This is good news for Territory footy lovers and I congratulate all parties on reaching a sensible outcome,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Last year I wrote to Channel 10, Channel Seven and the AFL voicing the concerns of Territory footy fans about the possible reduction in live AFL broadcasts in the Territory and urging them to repay the Territory’s support of AFL footy.

“I am particularly please that AFL Chief executive Andrew Demetriou has stepped in and heeded my calls to ensure that Territory footy fans did not lose out under the new arrangements.

“Territorians can now look forward to live, televised action this season with the usual anticipation and excitement.

“I look forward to the formal announcement of the new deal later this week,” Mr Vatskalis said.
