Leaders Support Territory

State and Territory leaders have supported the Northern Territory’s aspirations to become a State at the Council for the Australian Federation meeting in Sydney.

Chief Minister Clare Martin said she’s encouraged by the endorsement.

“There’s been strong support for Statehood in the Territory – and I welcome the endorsement.

“Federal opposition leader Kevin Rudd has also given his support.

“While the issue will need the strong support of Territorians - it’s also important to have the endorsement of the rest of Australia.

“Another outcome of the meeting was an agreement which could make it easier to find a plumber or builder in the Northern Territory.

“State and Territory leaders have approved the deal which will allow greater mobility of skills throughout Australia.

“There’ll be mutual recognition of 22 occupational licences, including priority trades –

electricians, plumbers, carpenters and joiners, bricklayers, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanics and motor mechanics.

“So if you’re a plumber or chippie in Melbourne or Sydney – there’s no reason not to come to the NT and enjoy the best lifestyle in Australia.

“The Council has also told the Commonwealth if it doesn’t commit to the commencement of an emissions trading scheme in 2010 – the States and Territories will go it alone.

“The Council has also recognised the importance for a united approach on water, including the Murray Darling and urban water planning.

“The Premiers and Chief Ministers acknowledged the importance of gas

to meet the future energy needs of Australia.”
