Palmerston Recreation Centre Officially Opened

The Territory Government's new $10 million Palmerston Recreation Centre was officially completed today.

Sports Minister Kon Vatskalis handed over management of the centre to the Palmerston Town Council and the YMCA saying the new state of the art facility will provide new sporting opportunities for the people, particularly the youth, of Palmerston.

“Sport is part of the Territory lifestyle and this investment provides the people of Palmerston a great indoor sports facility,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“I would also like to thank the three hard working Local Members of Palmerston and Rural Darwin, Chris Natt, James Burke & Ted Warren, for all their efforts in this process.

The special day was kicked off with festivities for the people of Palmerston with a sausage sizzle and a whole host of activities to celebrate the special day.

The Palmerston Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose indoor sports hall suitable for large scale events with flexible space for arts related activities and with the emphasis on youth.

The fully air conditioned indoor recreation centre has two full size basketball/netball courts, spectator seating, change rooms, ablutions, multi-purpose rooms, health and fitness rooms, kiosk, offices and foyer.

“I would also like to congratulate local company Norbuilt for doing a fantastic job on this centre’s construction.

“Another exciting event for this facility is the upcoming Arafura Games from 12 to 19 May. This facility will be home to the Netball and Volleyball Competition and will host international competition for the first time,” Mr Vatskalis said.
