Government Invests In Territory Golf

The Territory Government today announced a $100,000 investment in golfing infrastructure to prepare for a major golf tournament in June this year.

Minister for Sport Kon Vatskalis said the Darwin and Palmerston Golf Clubs will each receive $50,000 to prepare for the Australian Veteran Golfers’ Union National Championships to be held in Darwin from June 4 to June 8 2007.

“This is another great example of the Territory Government investing in the Territory’s great lifestyle,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Golf is a great game, enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Darwin in the Dry Season is the perfect weather for golf – it fits in perfectly with the great Territory lifestyle.”

“I thank the Member for Sanderson Len Kiely for all his hard work - he has been instrumental in bringing these infrastructure works to these clubs.”

The Australian Veteran Golfers’ Union National Championships is expected to attract over 600 players to Darwin.

“Not only will these people be coming up for a few rounds, but they will be injecting tourism dollars into our economy by experiencing Territory attractions such as Litchfield, Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and the Tiwi Islands.

“Under the Martin Government the Territory has the best economy and lifestyle in Australia, and our ongoing investment in sports and sporting infrastructure makes it even better," Mr Vatskalis said.
