New Money For Drags Will Give Green Light In Alice

The Territory Government today announced a $250,000 grant for the Central Australian Drag Racing Association (CADRA) to complete their new drag race strip.

Minister for Sport Kon Vatskalis said the additional money will ensure the drag race strip meets strict environmental conditions.

“I am happy to announce that the Territory Government will be giving a further $250,000 to CADRA so their new drag race strip will become a reality,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Not only will Alice residents receive a brand new drag race strip but our investment will ensure the environment will be protected.”

The Territory Government initially announced $800,000 for CADRA in 2005 for a new drag race strip when CADRA were stopped from racing on a light aircraft runway at Alice Springs Airport.

CADRA's proposal to construct the new drag race strip adjacent to the new Finke Desert Race facility hit a barrier when it was identified that the proposal had to meet strict environmental conditions such as storm water drainage and effluent management to protect the Roe Creek Borefield from contamination.

“The decision to spend extra money to ensure Roe Creek Borefield remains unpolluted and Alice Springs still receives their new drag race strip was a no-brainer,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“The Martin Labor Government is both economically and environmentally responsible, that’s why we have the best economy and lifestyle in Australia.

“Central Australians love their sport and their motor racing and I am pleased to assist in getting this drag race strip completed.

“We talk Alice up not down and I work hard to deliver quality sporting events and infrastructure for sport in Alice Springs,” Mr Vatskalis said.
