New Home Of Netball

A great win for the Territory's lifestyle with the announcement the Northern Territory Budget 2007/08 will deliver a new $4.8 million 10-court netball complex at Marrara.

Chief Minister Clare Martin and Minister for Sport Kon Vatskalis announced the important initiative at the future home of netball in Darwin.

Netball is part of the great Territory lifestyle  this new complex recognises the popularity of the sport, and meets another election commitment, Ms Martin said.

We have delivered Commonwealth Bank Trophy matches to Territorians and now we are providing a $4.8 million investment in grassroots netball.

It's proposed the facility will provide 10 Rebound Ace surface courts; spectator and change facilities.

Participation in sport is important for good health and well-being and I'm proud we're giving netball the attention it deserves.

Sports Minister Kon Vatskalis said he expected the new complex will provide a big boost to netball in Darwin for many years to come.

Netball is at bursting point in terms of existing capacity - this new facility will allow the sport to continue to grow at both a senior and junior level, Mr Vatskalis said.

I'd expect to see the new facilities will inspire more girls and women to play netball and will help Darwin to develop national and international level players.

Northern Territory Netball Association (NTNA) will lease the complex from the Government and Darwin Netball Association will also be based at the complex.

It will be located near the new Marrara indoor stadium to make the most of the sporting precincts parking and other facilities.

NTNA will now decide on a design of the netball complex and building is expected to start in the second quarter of next year.
