Darwin To Ambon Underway Again

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Kon Vatskalis, will today officially launch the 2007 Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race.

Mr Vatskalis said the event is a truly unique sailing experience for all involved.

“It’s fantastic that this event is now part of the Territory’s great lifestyle again – that’s why we backed them $15,000 to re-establish the committee and stage the race,” said Mr Vatskalis.

“This is an historic occasion, with the 600 nautical mile sailing classic returning to the Northern Territory’s sporting calendar for the first time since 1998.

“In its hey-day the race attracted up to 100 yachts. The small fleet setting sail today will hopefully attract further interest in years to come to help restore the race to its former glory.”

The 1999 Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race was marred by some instability in Ambon that led to its cancellation with the safety of competitors continuing to be the first priority of the race Committee.

The hardworking Committee, led by Coordinator Mr Colin “Noddy” Blair, are confident the right circumstances now exist for the race’s return.

“The race re-opens potential for a strong tourism exchange, and the Committee is well aware of this,” said Mr Vatskalis.

“I am certain that the people of Ambon will greet them with their traditional warm hospitality on arrival.”

The fleet will depart east of Stokes Hill Wharf today at 11.00 am.

The Minister will be aboard the start vessel - a navy patrol boat which will send off the modest fleet from Darwin.
