Sport, Sport and More Sport on the Agenda

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Kon Vatskalis today left for Melbourne to attend a week of meetings with national sporting bodies and the annual Sport and Recreation Ministers Council.

Mr Vatskalis said it will be a busy week promoting the Territory, our lifestyle, our sporting achievements and our sporting facilities.

The week includes meetings with Ministerial counterparts from across the country as well as Netball Australia, Cricket Australia, the Australian Paralympic Committee, the Football Federation of Australia, Melbourne Victory Football Club and the NSW Institute of Sport.

“The week is all about sport, sport and more sport for the Territory,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“I will be heavily promoting our facilities and also touring several facilities including the NSW Institute of Sport and the Melbourne Victory Football Club.

“Cricket Australia is on the agenda where we will discuss the future of International Cricket fixtures for the Territory and promote our facilities for training and acclimatisation purposes.

“Following the success of the Arafura Games 2007 and the Oceania Paralympic Championships I will also be meeting with the Australian Paralympic Committee to discuss the agreement for the Arafura Games 2009.”

The Northern Territory Government recently supported Netball NT with $50,000 to support their bid for the new Australian National League.

“I will be meeting with Netball Australia to reiterate the importance of including a Territory team in the national league which if successful will make them the third NT sport to do so,” Mr Vatskalis said.

The week will conclude by meeting with the Football Federation of Australia to discuss the future of football in Darwin.

Whilst in Melbourne the Minister will be attending the AFL Grand Final following an invitation from the AFL.
