Delia Lawrie MINISTER FOR NATURAL RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT AND HERITAGE |
Delivering on an important election promise, the Northern Territory Government has passed legislation to establish the Territory’s first independent Environment Protection Authority.
In an historic moment Environment Minister, Delia Lawrie carried the legislation through parliament this afternoon.
“This is a great day for the Territory we finally have an EPA which will protect our unique, largely untouched environment,” said Ms Lawrie.
“The Martin Labor Government is proud to bring the Territory an EPA – something the CLP failed to do over 27 years.”
“As the Territory continues to move forward into a period of development and growth the EPA will ensure our environment is not compromised along the way.”
“Our EPA has been designed specifically for the Territory’s unique environmental needs and concerns, thorough consultation with community and stakeholder groups led the interim board to recommend an EPA with a highly strategic role.”
“An important part of our EPA will be enabling both business and Government to make more informed decision about ecologically sustainable development.”
“The establishment of the EPA will ensure there are improved assessment processes and better certainty for everyone,” said Ms Lawrie
“It is imperative as we enter a new phase in the Territory’s development we have appropriate environmental protection measures in place and the EPA will ensure this happens.”
