The Alice Springs Solar City project has received an additional funding boost from the Northern Territory Government.

 

The Northern Territory Government has committed a further $928,000 to the Alice Springs Solar City Consortium, bringing the total Northern Territory Government investment to more than $3.5million.

 

Minister for Central Australia Elliot McAdam, said the funding demonstrates the Government’s commitment to furthering Alice Springs as a leader in energy efficient technology and leverages from our desert knowledge expertise.

 

“This initiative will bring many benefits to the Alice Springs community and the additional funding will support specific projects at the Alice Springs Hospital and Araluen Cultural Precinct,” Mr McAdam said.

 

“The recent World Solar Challenge highlighted the benefits solar energy can bring to Alice Springs and our future generations.

 

“With the amount of sunshine Alice Springs gets, the Solar Cities project will position us as a leader in sustainable living through the use of energy efficient methods and solar energy.”

 

Alice Springs was identified as the fourth Solar City in Australia in April 2007.  Others include Adelaide, Blacktown and Townsville.

 

Chairman of the Alice Springs Solar Cities Consortium Mr Grant Behrendorff, said the additional funding was critical to the project and would ensure the inclusion of large scale solar installations across Alice Springs.

 

“This funding will allow direct investments into various Government sites around Alice Springs,” Mr Behrendorff said.

 

“It will deliver energy efficient initiatives which will ultimately reduce the running costs at the Alice Springs Hospital.

 

“The funding will also allow an innovative solar air-conditioning project at the Araluen Cultural Precinct – which will be one of the first of its kind in Australia.”
