Big Day For Alice Springs Land Release

Minister for Planning and Lands, Delia Lawrie, said it has been a historic week in Alice Springs with the sale of Larapinta stage two and the Mt Johns subdivision now a step closer.

The Northern Territory Government sold the second stage of the Larapinta subdivision today and called for the $1.3 million headworks tenders for the Mt Johns subdivision on Tuesday.

Ms Lawrie said this is great news for people in Alice Springs wanting to build their own home.

“Larapinta stage two will deliver 39 single dwelling blocks to the Alice Springs housing market and Mt Johns is expected to deliver around 70 more blocks,” Ms Lawrie said.

“In line with the NT Government’s strategy to deliver affordable housing to people in Alice Springs, six of the blocks will be reserved for first home owners and one multiple dwelling block will be set aside for seniors public housing in Larapinta stage two.

“Planning for the future development and housing needs in Alice Springs is ongoing and work to identify other areas suitable for residential development is continuing as part of the Northern Territory Government’s Moving Alice Ahead project.

“Negotiations with the Native Title Holders for the Mt Johns land release are progressing well and will hopefully be finalised soon.

“The Northern Territory Government’s land release strategy strikes the right balance – it meets housing demand and doesn’t undermine the investment many people have already made by purchasing their own home.

“Six straight interest rate rises under the Howard Government since the last election has made life hard for mortgage holders, making it vital to create a balanced housing market,” Ms Lawrie said.

Tenders for the Mt Johns headworks close on December 4 2007 and for more information contact Geoff Christensen on 8951 5139.

Sale of Larapinta stage two blocks will start next year.
