Tourists to Discover Alice on new Walkway

A new interactive tourist walkway linking Alice Springs Railway Station to the CBD is on track to be completed by Christmas, Tourism Minister Paul Henderson said today.

Mr Henderson said the $430,000 Discovery Walkway delivered on another Government election commitment.

“The railway station is the gateway to Alice Springs for train travellers and the new walkway will provide a vibrant and entertaining welcome that encourages visitors to head into the CBD,” Mr Henderson said.

“The 400 metre Discovery Walkway, part of Government’s Moving Alice Ahead program, winds alongside the railway track towards the city centre and will be lined by exhibit boards featuring information about the art, history and natural landscape of Alice Springs.

“The path will be lit by solar power and shelter and seating will be erected amongst native plants, making the walk even more enjoyable for passengers disembarking from the Ghan.”

The NT Government has committed $330,000 to the project and Great Southern Railway has injected $100,000.

The work is being done by local business Sitzler Brothers.

“The walkway will be an important asset in drawing visitors into the heart of Alice Springs during their Ghan stopovers, and that’s good news for local businesses and tourism operators.”
