AFLNT Given Boost for Interstate Games

Sports Minister Matthew Bonson has announced that the NT Government would back the AFLNT to compete in an interstate footy league from 2009.

The NT Government has provided in-principle support of $200 000 a year for the next five years to back an AFLNT side in a southern competition.

As part of the five-year deal the Government will also contribute $50 000 a year for Kickstart to benefit young Indigenous footballers in remote areas across the Territory.

The AFLNT wants to have a side playing in either the WA Football League or SA Football League from 2009.

“Territorians love their footy – and not much beats backing a Territory side to beat a team from interstate,” Mr Bonson said.

“The Labor Government has already shown its commitment to delivering live AFL matches for Territorians, and now we are taking Australian football to a whole new level by getting the best of the best in the Territory out there competing at state level.

“We want to support our guys to play in either the SANFL or the WAFL competition from 2009.

“I am absolutely stoked to confirm on behalf of the NT Government this in principle financial support to help make this dream a reality.

“This is also good news for the Territory economy as we continue to promote our Territory footy players nationally, our grass roots organisations and all Territorians who love their footy.”

Chief Executive Officer Tony Frawley said the AFLNT had just completed its Business Plan for the five-year deal. This will be submitted to the SA National Football League and West Australian Football League next week.

“A commitment by the Territory Government was critical to the future of the bid and it will enable negotiations to commence for entry into one of those leagues in 2009,” Mr Frawley said.
