NTG Secures Rugby 7s Over Next Three Years

The NT Government has helped secure the future of the highly popular Rugby 7s tournament through a $300 000 investment over the next three years to keep the matches in the Territory.

Sports Minister Matthew Bonson today announced that the Heineken Hottest 7’s in the World Rugby Tournament will also be elevated major event status.

“The Hottest 7s is a real winner with crowds because of its carnival atmosphere and the mix of teams, including sides from overseas.

“I’m delighted the Territory Government is able to provide another three-year deal to back this wonderful tournament,” Mr Bonson said.

“Sport is an important part of the Territory’s social fabric, and events such as the Rugby 7’s certainly contribute to making our lifestyle one of the best in the world.”

The Rugby 7’s Tournament has up to 20 teams from across the Territory competing in Darwin.

“Since 2005, the profile of the event has grown and is now attracting high profile teams such as New Zealand, Fiji, Singapore, Japan and Australia’s national teams.

“Additionally, in 2007 the Tournament introduced a women’s competition which has given the event greater family appeal.”

Each team has 12 players with 7 on the field during the match. The game has 2 x 7 minute halves, with a 2 minute interval and is played on a full sized rugby field.

“As well as the great social vibe, the Rugby 7’s also brings with it economic benefits to our local economy, and really does promote the Territory and its lifestyle to the rest of the world”, Mr Bonson said.

NT Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer Tim Heath said the NT Government funding would help added boost to this growing event, which was also supported by Friend of Rugby.

“And it’s an endorsement of what the tournament has achieved over the last 3 years and its future direction.

"This support will give us the opportunity to proceed the tournament to a greater level.

"It will attract more international teams, both in quality and quantity, therefore giving our local teams the opportunity to compete at a higher level and will provide a greater spectacle for the people of the NT."
