Investing in Alice Parks

The Territory Government continues to invest in our iconic parks, improving the lifestyle of all Territorians, boosting our economy and enhancing the visitor experience.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife, Len Kiely, said $1 million has been spent improving visitor facilities at the West MacDonnell National Park in Central Australia.

“Territory National Parks are among the best in the world - the jewel in the Territory’s crown – and we are committed to ensuring they are managed and preserved for future generations.

“New facilities at the West MacDonnell National Park include a new amphitheatre and a hi-tech, eco-friendly toilet block at Ellery Creek - the first of its kind within our Parks.

“400,000 people visit West MacDonnell National Park every year – it’s an iconic place and we want it to remain that way.

“The new amphitheatre at Ormiston Gorge includes a 130sqm presentation area for the regular Ranger guided activities including slide shows, campfire and nature talks.

“Two new shelters are also part of the construction package to improve facilities, with one located at Ormiston Gorge and the other located at Redbank Gorge.

“The new shelter at Ormiston Gorge will provide updated park information as well as a shady sanctuary for bushwalkers.

“The shelter will provide interpretive information about the popular walks, including sections of the Larapinta Trail, the Ormiston Pound Walk, the Ghost Gum Walk and the Waterhole Walk.

“The Redbank Gorge shelter includes seating for day visitors and small tour groups visiting and picnicking at the Gorge.

West MacDonnell National Park is a vast and incredible reminder of how an ancient landscape has been sculptured over time through climatic conditions.

“The magnificent mountains, gorges, and rock pools make a visit to the park well worth while,” Mr Kiely said.
