Mayell to Move Alice Ahead

Chief Minister Paul Henderson today announced Tony Mayell as Central Australia’s new top public servant.

Mr Mayell has been appointed Executive Director Southern Region of the Department of the Chief Minister, following the retirement of John Baskerville in December.

“Tony has a solid background in the public and private sectors and, having spent many years living and working in the Centre, has strong local networks,” Mr Henderson said.

“He will be a great asset to the people of Central Australia and my Government.”

Mr Mayell attended Primary School in Tennant Creek, and returned to Central Australia in the 1970s to work in the tourism industry in Uluru and Alice Springs before heading to Darwin.

He was the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Territory Tourist Commission from 1996 to 2002, and was most recently the General Manager at the Ayers Rock Resort.

“As part of his new role, Tony will also have responsibility for the Department of Business, Economic and Regional Development in the Centre,” said Mr Henderson.

“These two key roles will help drive major projects in the region, such as Moving Alice Ahead, while implementing new strategies to ensure continued growth and development.

“I look forward to working with Mr Mayell in making Alice Springs a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
