Sports Minister Matthew Bonson today officially opened the Northern Territory Swimming Championship.
The annual Championships are being held at the Casuarina Swimming Pool, attracting swimmers from across the Territory.
“Around 300 swimmers will be involved in the competition throughout the weekend – the Territory’s top swimmers from 10 clubs coming together to battle it out in the pool”.
At the official opening Mr Bonson also presented awards to swimming’s hard working volunteers. Mr Bonson presented the inaugural Minister for Sport and Recreation Club Volunteer of the Year certificates acknowledging the ongoing efforts that volunteers play in sport.
“These certificates are for the volunteers who have shown an outstanding contribution to swimming in the past year,” Mr Bonson said.
“Sport is a key part of our great lifestyle and sporting events would not happen without the efforts of volunteers.
“Whilst our athletes get the chance to stand on the podium these volunteers often go unrecognised formally. These awards are a chance to say thanks and show our appreciation.”
