More options for short-term accommodation in Alice Springs

The Territory Government’s determination to get people into short-term housing and off the streets has taken another step forward with the completion of extensions at Ayiparinya Hostel in Alice Springs

The Minister for Housing, Kon Vatskalis, said an additional 24 beds are now available in Alice Springs for short to medium term managed accommodation.

“The Territory Government provided a grant of $1.3 million for Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL) to undertake the project to alleviate the accommodation needs of Indigenous people visiting Alice Springs for health related purposes,” he said.

“This is part of the Territory Government’s overall plan to tackle anti-social behaviour and to do that we must get people off the streets and into managed accommodation where possible.”

Six new family cabins have been constructed, bringing the capacity of the hostel to 94 beds.

As extensive site works were required, AHL took the opportunity to improve client amenities by relocating children’s play equipment, enhancing landscaping and installing a swimming pool at its own expense.

Local companies were involved in delivering the project.

AHL provides a wide range of accommodation and support services for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people through a national network of some 120 hostels.

It is well respected in Central Australia and has an impressive record as a long term service provider.
