Work starts on Alice Springs Pool

Work will commence shortly on the construction of the Alice Springs Aquatic Centre, providing a first-class recreation facility for the Red Centre.

 

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the $16 million project fulfils an election commitment for the people of Alice Springs.

 

“The Territory Government has contributed $8.1 million towards the construction of the centre that will include a 25m indoor heated swimming pool.

 

“We worked in partnership with the Federal Government who have provided $4 million, and the Alice Springs Town Council who will manage the project.

 

Alice Springs construction company Probuild have won the contract for Stage One, with work expected to start in May.

 

“Stage One includes a toddler pool, learn to swim pool, water play area and landscaping.

 

“The design contract for Stage Two has been secured by WA-based company Tompkins MDA Architects who bring a wealth of experience in aquatic centre design.

 

“Stage 2 includes an indoor lap pool, wave pool, leisure and programs pool, river course and slide, with work to begin in 2009.

 

The main features of the Aquatic Centre are:

 

 

“Stage One is expected to be completed by September and I look forward to visiting the new centre later in the year,” Mr Henderson said.
