The Northern Territory Government has awarded a $1.6 million contract that will see
Member for Stuart and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development Karl Hampton said the Tanami was an important highway for significant community and mining activity.
“The Northern Territory Government has committed $12 million to upgrade the Tanami over six years,” he said.
“So far 187 kilometres of the Tanami is sealed and this tender will seal and upgrade a further 6.5 kilometres through to Tilmouth Well.
“Newmont, the owners of the Granites Gold Mine, are supplying the aggregate material for the project and I thank them for their contribution to help further develop the Tanami.
“In addition, over $2 million will be spent on maintenance on the Tanami by the Territory Government this financial year.
“This is a vast and isolated stretch of road that requires continuous upgrading to increase economic opportunities from mining and transport and provide safer links to Yuelamu, Laramba and Yuendumu.
“The Territory Government will continue to work with the Commonwealth Government and the mining and trucking industry to achieve further improvements.
“The Territory Government’s strategic sealing program on the Tanami will continue, resulting in more priority sections of the road being sealed,” Mr Hampton said.
Minister for Central Australia Rob Knight said that developing roads infrastructure in the region will create more economic opportunities.

The $1.6 million tender for upgrades and sealing works was awarded to Gilbert Earthmoving.
