Gardens Oval Facilities Upgrades

Sports Minister Matthew Bonson has welcomed news that Darwin City Council (DCC) is ready to enter discussions with the NT Government and Cricket NT about upgrading cricket facilities at Gardens Oval.

Last month the NT Government, Cricket Australia and Cricket NT signed off on a $3.1 million agreement to both boost local cricket and ensure another five years of international cricket for Darwin.

The Territory Government committed $2.1 million to the agreement and Cricket Australia $1 million.

Last night’s DCC meeting gave the green light to the start of formal discussions between Council and Cricket NT about the possible upgrade of facilities at Gardens Oval.

“The Gardens Oval is representative of Darwin and would make a magnificent home for cricket,” Mr Bonson said

"As part of the five-year agreement signed last month the Government has committed to improving local cricket infrastructure.

"Sport is an important part of our great lifestyle.

"We want to ensure Territorians not only get to see the best players in the world, but have access to the facilities to help develop cricket stars for the future."

Cricket Australia has confirmed Australia will play Bangladesh in three one-day matches on August 31, September 3 and September 6 at TIO Stadium in the first international matches to be played as part of the agreement.
