Alison Fitch Named NT Sportsperson Of The Year

Triathlon champion Alison Fitch was last night named the Qantas NT Sportsperson of the Year at the 2008 Northern Territory Sports Awards.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Matthew Bonson congratulated Fitch, who took out the top honours ahead of fellow finalists Commonwealth Games medallist Crystal Attenborough and triathlete Sophie Hawkin.

“Alison’s world class performances in Ironman Triathlon events have inspired many would-be Territory triathletes to get involved in this challenging endurance sport,” Mr Bonson said.

“Last year Alison raced against a selection of the world’s most elite triathletes, including an Olympic silver medalist and a seven-times world champion - and beat all in at least one of her events.

“Through her multiple successes, Alison has put Darwin, the Territory and Australia on the world map as a place of triathlon excellence.”

Territory swimming sensation Kia King won the TIO Junior Sportsperson of the Year, while Athletics Coach Cherry Harvey won the Crown Lager Eric Johnston Coach of the Year.

Mr Bonson also presented the Hall of Champions to Benny LewFatt, and Roll of Honour to Frank Geddes.

These awards to recognise and acknowledge the Territory’s past sporting heroes on and off the sporting field.

The NT Sports Awards are held each year to recognise outstanding achievements of athletes, teams, administrators and umpires.
