New East Arm Fishing Facility Set To Be Built By End Of October

Fisheries Minister Chris Natt today announced local company Ostojic Group as the successful tenderer to build a new multimillion dollar recreational fishing facility at East Arm in Darwin.

“Today’s announcement delivers on an important election commitment this Government made to enhance the fishing experience for recreational anglers,” Mr Natt said.

“I congratulate local company Ostojic Group for being awarded the $4.6 million contract – which includes the construction of a new East Arm boat ramp and associated facilities such as an access road, as well as the creation of five lots for the Land Development Corporation.

“Ostojic expect to begin construction this month with the new $4.6 million facility to open to recreational anglers by the end of October – which is a great time to go fishing for barramundi in Darwin Harbour as this iconic fish becomes more active and easier to catch.

“Territorians love to fish and this facility will provide recreational anglers – and their families - with more opportunities to take advantage of the Territory’s great lifestyle.

“The final design of the new $4.6 million facility reflects community consultation and this Government will continue to work with recreational anglers to improve our fishing infrastructure.”

Features of the new $4.6 million facility include:

·        A 12m wide, dual lane boat ramp that will be about 70m long.

·        30 bays for vehicles and trailers, 13 bays for vehicles only and one dedicated bay for disabled usage only.

·        A turn around area at the top of the boat ramp to accommodate the turning movement of a 4x4 vehicle and 7m long boat trailer.

·        A pontoon that will enable dry access to vessels when retrieving and launching, a loading facility, shade structure and toilets.

·        Provision for fresh water at the shade structure and loading facility.

·        A remotely operated floodlight at the top of the ramp to allow retrieving and launching of vessels during night time hours.

·        Road access allowing the Land Development Corporation to create five lots for industrial use.

“Fishing is the lure of the Territory and this Government continues to make recreational fishing even better,” Mr Natt said.
