$3 Million Boost Delivers More Cyclone Shelters

Budget 2008 will include $3 million to deliver more cyclone shelters for Territory families right across the Top End.

Infrastructure Minister Delia Lawrie said upgrading more buildings as cyclone shelters will boost community safety.

“Cyclones are a part of life living in the Top End and the Northern Territory Government is investing $3 million in the upcoming Budget to deliver more cyclone shelters.

“As our population continues to grow it is vital we deliver increased places for families in shelters in readiness for severe cyclones.

The $3 million cyclone shelter program in the 2008 Budget includes upgrades to the following places:

“Marrara Indoor Sports Complex will deliver up to 1,500 places for people to shelter in Darwin,” said Ms Lawrie.

“Works to Marrara will include an upgrade to the roof and adding debris screening for all of the doors and windows.

“The new cyclone shelters follow the recent $1.6 million upgrades program for Nightcliff and Taminmin High School.

“The $1 million Casuarina Senior College upgrades are also currently underway and are due to be completed mid year.

“The Henderson Government is delivering for Territory families by investing in cyclone shelter upgrades and making a safer community.”
