Darwin’s Hottest 7’s In The World Now The Richest

Heineken is the new naming rights sponsor of Darwin's Hottest 7's in the World it was

announced today.

The tournament will be held in Darwin over the 20th and 21st of January and is expected to attract the world’s top name Rugby 7’s teams, including last year’s champions the Fijian Barbarians.

Minister for Sport, Kon Vatskalis, said the Government had continued its strong support of Territory Rugby and the event because of the growing profile of the sport and the key role the Hottest 7s plays in attracting tourists to Darwin during the Wet season.

“I congratulate Tim Heath and the NTRU on securing Heineken as a major sponsor and I am looking forward to another weekend of world class rugby right here in Darwin,” Minister Vatskalis said.

“The Territory Government is a strong supporter of Territory Rugby with funding of $125 000 per year and also $20 000 in direct support for this tournament.

“The increase in prize money from $25 000 to $35 000 makes it the richest rugby tournament in Australia.

“I understand that the Major Events is considering an approach by the NTRU to have the Heineken Hottest 7s listed as a major event due to the outstanding success of previous tournaments.

“This tournament will provide a timely boost for business in particular local tourism operators in what is traditionally our low season,” Minister Vatskalis said.
