The first comprehensive economic report about Alice Springs has revealed business confidence in the town is high.

 

The Minister for Regional Development, Kon Vatskalis, today unveiled the Alice Springs Economic Profile, the result of a survey conducted in November 2007 to obtain information on Alice Springs’ current economic position and provide information to investors about key existing and future projects in the region.

 

“The Territory Government is committed to supporting business in the Northern Territory and driving economic development,” said Mr Vatskalis.

 

“This profile is an important source of information on the Alice Springs economy and will be a good reference point for discussions surrounding the economic future of the town.”

 

The survey results indicated –

 

·             79% of businesses were confident of business prospects over the next 12 months;

·             74% expect an increase in value of sales;

·             61% expected profitability to increase;

·             80% of businesses source their goods and services from Alice Springs;

·             97% of the customer base is in Alice Springs.

 

 

Local businesses were contacted to provide input to the survey, which combined with Census information and other Australian Bureau of Statistics data, to build a well researched economic profile.

 

Businesses were encouraged to have their say and take part in this joint venture between the Alice Springs Economic Development Committee (EDC) and the Northern Territory Government in partnership with Charles Darwin University.

 

This data is supported by Sensis® Business Index February 2008, which indicated that Northern Territory recorded the highest business confidence of all States and Territories.

 

“The survey shows that most small business owners are optimistic about the profitability of their own businesses in 2008, which is very good news for Alice Springs,” said Mr Vatskalis.
