Alice Springs Tourism Operators Receive 2012 Vision

The Minister for Tourism, Kon Vatskalis, met with tourism operators in Alice Springs this morning to discuss the Northern Territory Tourism Strategic Plan.

Mr Vatskalis said the plan sets the direction for industry over the next five years.

“Tourism is a key economic driver for the Territory, generating around $1.8 billion every year and employing 11,000 Territorians,” he said.

“This new plan focuses on how we can create a unique product to make the Territory a must-see, must-return destination.

“Enhancing access to the Northern Territory, protecting the environment and developing compelling marketing activities are core themes within the plan.

“The Territory Government will be working with operators to develop and celebrate the NT’s unique environment and culture in a way that is attractive to both Territorians and visitors.”

As part of the plan tourism operators are being encouraged to gain industry accreditation.

“This will improve industry standards and service and contribute to a sustainable tourism industry by delivering a better experience for our visitors,” said Mr Vatskalis.

“To address the rapidly changing consumer behaviours and expectations, the Tourism Strategic Plan reinforces the need to become an e-enabled industry where travellers can conduct online research, bookings and payments for tourism products in real time, anytime.”
