Local Government Reform Moving Ahead

Local Government reform is one step closer with the new shires taking responsibility for service delivery in the bush from today.

Local Government Minister Rob Knight said he was pleased with the progress of the reform process but there is still work to be done.

“Local Government reform is a step by step process which doesn’t end today,” said Mr Knight.

“I’ve been working hard to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible and as the transition continues we will find solutions to any problems that arise.

“I will continue to travel across the Territory to listen to people about the best way forward for local government.

“Local Government relies on the grass roots involvement of the community and I encourage people to get involved with their Shire.

“People who live in the Shires will determine how their Shire evolves over time to meet the changing needs of bush communities.

“Over the next few months Chief Executives will work closely with elected members from the old councils to ensure the Shires are ready to lead regional development in the bush.

“In October elections will be held and the new councils will lead communities forward.”
