Work Starts on New Netball Complex

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the start of work on Darwin’s new 10-court netball complex delivers on another Government election commitment.

Mr Henderson said Territory business Sitzler Bros has won the $5.8 million tender to construct the new facility at the Marrara Sporting Precinct, with site clearing starting today.

“Netball is one of the Territory’s most popular sports, and the new 10 court-complex is an investment in the future of the game,” Mr Henderson said.

“The current home of netball in Darwin at Parap is rundown, with cracked courts and poor lighting.

“The new facility will take netball to a new level in the NT, providing state-of-the art courts for the more than 1000 registered netball players in Darwin and the ever-growing number of junior players.”

Darwin’s new netball complex will include 10 competition-standard Rebound Ace courts, players’ change rooms and administration and spectator facilities.

The new courts will be ready for use in early 2009.

Mr Henderson was joined on site today by Ms Thea Pearce of Netball NT.

“Unlike the current situation at Parap Courts, the new complex will be owned by the Northern Territory Netball Association, providing certainty for the organisation as the sport continues to grow in to the future,” said Mr Henderson.

“My Government is delivering for Territory families, and the new netball complex will be a great asset for Darwin’s netball community.”
