NT Government Secures NRL Match

The Northern Territory Government has secured a pre-season NRL match in Darwin between the Gold Coast Titans and Cronulla Sharks, Chief Minister Paul Henderson announced today.

Mr Henderson said the Government had contributed $178,000 to the agreement with the Northern Territory Rugby League and the teams to bring the match to Darwin next year.

“Sport is a great part of the Territory lifestyle, and the Territory Government is committed to bringing top level games to the Territory for families to enjoy,” Mr Henderson said.

“Investments like this are about making the Territory an even better place to live, giving Territorians access to national sport without travelling interstate and letting young players see their heroes in action.

“I am sure a big crowd will turn out for the game at Richardson Park on 21 February.”

Sports Minister Matthew Bonson said the Titans boasted players such as Scott Prince and Matt Rogers, while the Sharks had players such as Greg Bird and Paul Gallen.

“Top level sporting events are becoming an even bigger part of the Territory lifestyle – we’ve just had international soccer, AFL and V8s – international cricket will be here in coming weeks and now we’ve got National Ruby League,” Mr Bonson said.

“On top of all that the Darwin Cup Carnival is just getting underway and getting more popular by the year.”

As part of the agreement, the Gold Coast Titans and Cronulla Sharks will take part in coaching and community events during their stay in the Territory.

The last NRL game played in the Territory was held last year at Richardson Park between the Newcastle Knights and Penrith Panthers, attracting a crowd of more than 9,000 people.
